On February 11, 2019, International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a workshop called I+D+M2 was organized at the Technological Innovation Support Center (CAIT) of the University of Madrid (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, or UPM).
The objective of the workshop was to showcase and share the research work of women working for UPM and related companies, like PlantResponse. It set forth the work of researchers with a strong scientific career from diverse environments, such as telco & IT, aerospace, biomedicine and plant biotechnology, among others.
Our agronomy expert Sandra Díaz was invited to present the project “Characterization of the fungal endophyte PRB110TM and its beneficial interaction with plants.” Sandra explained how our promising and innovative product PRB110TM promotes plant growth and increases crop yield, and described how the beneficial interaction between microbes and plants is enhanced when crops are under adverse environmental conditions, such as phosphate starvation or water limitation.
PlantResponse™ welcomes the organization of these conferences: they promote women’s participation in science, highlight the difficulties women face in their professional career, and encourage young researchers to continue with their scientific careers.

Sandra has a BSc in Engineering and Agronomic Science, MSc in Agronomic Engineering, and MSc in Agricultural Economics. She is an expert in plant biotechnology and related microorganisms’ genetic resources. At PlantResponse™, she is in charge of validating field trials of our microbial candidates, and screens collections of endophytic microorganisms to determine potential candidates for commercialization.
About International Day of Women and Girls in Science
The idea for an International Day of Women and Girls in Science arose during the Inaugural High-Level World Women’s Health and Development Forum, organized by the Royal Academy of Science International Trust (RASIT) and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), which was held on 10–11 February 2015 at the United Nations headquarters.
